Powerline has this discussion of Romney and his chances with GOP evangelicals. While I think they may be correct in that many evangelicals could embrace him as a fellow "Christian," the identification still is problematic. See my earlier post.
I identify with John's statement from the link to "Powerline." He writes: "I am a Christian conservative, although when people use that phrase they always seem to be talking about someone else."
I also agree that Christian Conservatives and Evangelicals would have little problem rallying around a Mormon Republican candidate in th general, especially if the GOP candidate was facing that famous Methodist from NY.
On the other hand, I am convinced that this is not Mitt Romney's moment. I think he can win the vice-presidential nomination or position himself for 2012, but he is a real dark horse candidate for the presidency in 2008. Not that it could not happen, but it would be the most unlikely nomination since Bill Clinton (who ran in a year when all the "smart" people opted out), which was the most unlikely nomination since Jimmy Carter.
I don't think conservative Christians are going to be against Romney because he is a Mormon per se, but I am just not sure why they would be for him.
