I think we face a huge challenge in presenting these ideas in ways which would be interesting to the "average citizen" however. I do not have much to propose on how to approach that challenge, however.

In my earlier post I pointed to the difficulty in making Gagnon's analysis and argument interesting to the larger audience. I do not think this public is so far removed as to not 'get' the peg and hole analogy.
I also think that Gagnon's notion of "essential otherness" is deeper than this - his comparison to incest certainly requires consideration of a more complex issue.

When I said "interesting I should have also said 'important' I can easily imagine people conceding his point about an apparent lack of otherness' in homosexual pairing but immediately appealing to other "more important' issues (such as individual freedom, value of diversity, etc.) I do not agree that these are more important but suggest it is difficult to persuade others on this point.
I am currently re-reading Lewis' Hideous Strength - Perhaps his illustration of the interplay between physical eroticism and gender differences will suggest an effective rhetorical approach...
